SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

YMCA camp counselors serve the families of our community with programs and services tailored to fit the needs of those we reach. Three overarching goals drive our work: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Come join our team and make a difference! This summer, we are offering 3 types of Camp Counselor positions, with multiple people working in each category:

Traditional Day Camp

Staff mix it up each week to have something new and exciting to work on with our campers!

Explorers: 

At Camp K, Explorers enjoy the traditional day camp setting. Each “pod” will consist of ratios of 5 campers to 1 staff person. Explorers participate in arts & crafts, hiking & nature exploration, sports, and swimming. Additional activities will be created based on their staff for a block of Counselor-Led Activities!

Navigators: 

At Camp K, Navigators enjoy the traditional day camp setting. Each “pod” will consist of up to 12 campers and 2 staff members. Navigator campers participate in archery, arts & crafts, boating, hiking & nature exploration, sports, and swimming. Additional activities will be created based on their staff for a block of Counselor-Led Activities!

Wayfinders: 

At Camp K, Wayfinders enjoy the traditional day camp setting. Each “pod” will consist of up to 12 campers and 2 staff members. Wayfinder campers will be able to participate in archery, arts & crafts, boating, hiking & nature exploration, low ropes course, sports, and swimming. Additional activities will be created based on their staff for a block of Counselor-Led Activities!

Specialty Camps

Must be able to lead all camps. A lifeguard certification is preferred, but not mandatory-- trainings can happen at Camp K upon your arrival. Staff working with specialty camps are scheduled based on need & interest in subject matter. Camps change weekly, as would staff schedules. 

ANIMATION CREATION

It’s time for some innovative animation! Learn how to create a stop-motion mini-movie from screen test to post-production. Develop your own story, make a storyboard, and design scenery and colorful characters. Additionally, create your own Pokemon and its evolutions, and learn about comic books! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

NEW! BOARD GAMES

The McEvoy lodge has turned into Board Game Central in this fun-filled week of playing games. Learn about strategy, planning ahead, healthy competition, creating unique games to share with others, and more! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

NEW! BOATING

Take to the water in this canoe and kayak focused camp! Learn the basics of small craft safety (lifejackets, parts of the canoe & kayak, parts of the paddles, safe entry/exit, etc.) as well as rescue skills (self rescues and t-rescues) each day as well as boating around both side of Knickerbocker Lake! This camp will take a break from the water for 1 block to enjoy either the sports field, gaga, or arts & crafts. 

CRAFTS

Express your creativity with different art forms such as clay work, themed crafts, friendship bracelets, jewelry, paper mâché, origami, and more! Your child will use a hands-on approach to bring their imaginative and unique designs to life. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

CREATE & BUILD

Build LEGO masterpieces, create sculptures, design, and draw a new board game, and find ways to protect your egg during the egg drop challenge. Use teamwork, imagination, and different techniques to test and retest their creations. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

DRAWING & PAINTING

Express your creativity with different drawing & painting forms ranging from watercolor to oil pastels, string painting to shading, learning about the color wheel, and using nature to create art! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

NEW! DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

Use your imagination to jump into the D&D world! Campers will learn important skills to help them take the reins of a D&D game and create a fun and thought-provoking role playing environment. Foster social development and interaction, leadership, and organizational skills. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! FANTASTIC FASHIONS

This camp is designed to create wearable art! Explore art, fashion and sculpture to create a unique, wearable piece of art. Campers will dress each other as well as work with mannequins using recycled materials such as sheets, towels, blankets, handkerchiefs, and more! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! FIBER ARTS

Learn the basics of sewing, weaving, felting, creating natural dyes, and more. Projects will be made each day, but some may take the whole week to create. All projects will be taken home by campers by the end of the session. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

FORT BUILDING

Are you ready for a fun, fort-filled week? Put your building skills to the test with a variety of tools and materials! Once forts are constructed, games such as capture the flag, dodge ball, and track down will be played! Strong, positive teamwork is what is needed to finish the week. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

NEW! GAMING

Join the Camp K staff and Trevor from the Boothbay Y to enjoy casual and competitive gaming at camp! Games that campers might see include Smash Brothers, Super Mario Brothers, and more! Learn something new, or show off your skills. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! MUSIC & MOVEMENT

Get your body moving in this interactive, music and dance inspired camp! Campers will learn about different types and cultures of music,  percussion instruments (creating their own at times!), as well as dancing! Campers will also have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! MUSIC VIDEO

This camp is designed for campers who love music, dancing, and creating! Campers will work in small groups to choose a song, choreograph, rehearse, film, and edit their music video. Waivers will need to be signed for us to share final creations. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

OUTDOOR COOKING

Join our specialty camp staff to learn how to build a fire, cook on an open fire, learn outdoor recipes, learn how to be environmentally friendly when cleaning up, and more in this full day camp. Our campers will learn how to construct a fire pit and cook a plethora of recipes to snack on throughout the day! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

NEW! OUTER SPACE

Take your kids on an adventure from home or the classroom to outer space! Spend an entire week of learning about space and space-themed experiments! Kids will learn all about the phases of the moon, how to build a space shuttle and a satellite, and all about constellations with these hands-on projects! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

NEW! PHOTOGRAPHY

Aspiring photographers can explore their artistic side with a camera! Campers will have access to Camp K's mini cameras, GoPros, and our Camp K digital camera. Campers will learn about subject placement, shadowing, editing on our computers, and more in this session! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! ROBIN HOOD

Take to the archery range to reign in your skills with a bow and arrow! Activities will include learning the basics of archery, the rules and whistle signals, how to utilize the bow and arrow, target practice, target creations, and lots of fun games! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! SKETCH, COMEDY & IMPROV

Each camper will actively participate in learning the history of sketch comedy, how to properly prepare to shoot a sketch, how a sketch is masterfully crafted, and be apart of the construction of a sketch from start to finish. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

NEW! WATER BUGS

Spend a ton of time during the day in or around the water! Activities that this camp will participate in include swimming, boating, swim lessons (instructor permitting), water balloon tosses, water games, relays, and more! This camp will have an opportunity to take a break each day if they want to spend time either at sports, gaga, or arts & crafts. 

WIZARDING WORLD

“Alohomora!” Your child will leave their muggle lives behind them and enter the Wizarding World. They will learn spells, potions, the game of Quidditch while participating in STEAM based activities and engage with the community. Grab your wands, robes, and spell books and join us for some wizarding fun! This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day.

Adventure Camps

Staff working with adventure camps are scheduled based on need & interest in subject matter. Camps change weekly, as would staff schedules. 

ALL SPORTS

Play, learn, and meet new friends in the new All-Sports Camp. Throughout the week, your child will learn and play sports such as basketball, soccer, floor hockey, pickleball, volleyball, dodge ball, and various outdoor yard games! There will be a focus on teamwork, good sportsmanship, and the YMCA’s 4 core values: respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. A half day will be spent on the Baldwin Center Low Ropes Course. This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

AQUA

Make a splash exploring some of Maine’s incredible wildlife, marine wonders, and water parks! Field trips include beaches, regional swimming holes, Aquaboggen, and more. For the fish in your family, this is the camp for them! A trained lifeguard will be leading this camp so our campers can stay safe while exploring the water. This camp is designed for ages 10+.

NEW! AQUA JR. 

Make a splash exploring some of Maine’s incredible wildlife, marine wonders, and water parks! Field trips include beaches, regional swimming holes, and more. For the fish in your family, this is the camp for them! A trained lifeguard will be leading this camp so our campers can stay safe while exploring the water. This camp is designed for ages 7-9 years. 

BALDWIN (levels 1/2)

Focus on team building, trust activities, learning to listen to your instinct, boosting your confidence, and fun at our full day Baldwin Center high ropes and low ropes course-based facility! Once per day, swimming will be scheduled to cool off at the main campus. Field trip each Friday to Monkey C, Monkey-Do. This camp is designed for first-time ropes course campers. 

BALDWIN (levels 2/3)

Focus on team building, trust activities, learning to listen to your instinct, boosting your confidence, and fun at our full day Baldwin Center high ropes and low ropes course-based facility! Once per day, swimming will be scheduled to cool off at the main campus. Field trip each Friday to Monkey C, Monkey-Do. This camp is designed for campers who are comfortable with heights and have climbed courses before. 

NEW! COOKING & BAKING 

Join Sarah Gordon at the Boothbay Region YMCA's teaching kitchen to learn how to be safe in the kitchen, learn to read recipes, and make delicious snacks! This camp will start and end their days at Camp K where they will take a bus to the Y to start their day. Campers will also have an opportunity to swim or boat each day to cool off. 

FISHING

Take to the lake to learn the basics of fishing for the first couple of days of this adventure camp, and then head out into the beautiful state of Maine to discover fishing holes and other bodies of water in the region. In addition to fishing, campers will learn about types of bait, different types of fishing, and will learn to create their own lures!

NEW! FORAGING

Spend time in nature to discover the wonders in the woods! Join Onna in this camp to learn about types of plants that are edible, make some snacks with them, brew tea, and create your own baskets to collect your findings! Field trips will be taken. This camp will have an opportunity to swim or boat each day. 

GARDENING

Hang out with our specialty camp staff to learn about all things gardening! With activities including but not limited to planting, harvesting, plant identification, ecosystems, color wheel theory with nature, natural plant buddies, and more, this camp will educate you on all things natural! We will take a field trip to the farmer's market as well as Conley's to purchase plants to create hanging baskets. This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

HIKING

Take to the local land trusts for the first two days of this camp, and then end the week going on a day hike to a Mid-Coast Maine Mountain. Hiking experience and endurance is required, as one of the hikes we take will be just about 9 miles in total. Two staff members certified in WAFA will go on trips with this group to ensure maximum safety.

LOW ROPES

Take to the low ropes course for this full day camp! Learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, the elements of the course, and more! Each day, campers will have the opportunity to swim or boat and play games that focus on the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 

NEW! MYTH BUSTERS

Campers will enjoy a week of learning about ciphers, riddles, creating their own escape rooms, and taking a field trip to the Escape Room in Portland or Brunswick. An additional waiver will need to be signed to participate in the Escape Rooms. Each day, swimming will be scheduled to cool off in the lake! 

NEW! NATURE EXPLORATION & HIKING

Campers will travel by bus from Camp Kn to local land trusts. Each day will be a different location where we will learn about the plants and environment as well as an activity and lunch. 

NINJA WARRIOR

Refine techniques, run courses, and condition campers for obstacle course racing. Take to the Low Ropes Course at the Baldwin Center, utilize equipment at the sports field, and more to stay active, work as a team, and have fun! This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day. 

SURVIVOR (Female)

Challenge yourself to learn new skills in the outdoors such as building fires, cooking on an open flame, building shelters to sleep in, learning about nature, learning how to dispose of waste in nature, learn how to plan for a backpacking/open water trip, and more! Join our Adventure Camp to learn how to be a survivor in the wilderness. On Friday night, campers and staff will sleep on Jackson Island to make dinner, enjoy a campfire, and cook breakfast/clean up on the last day of camp. All staff are trained and are lifeguard certified. 

SURVIVOR (Male)

Challenge yourself to learn new skills in the outdoors such as building fires, cooking on an open flame, building shelters to sleep in, learning about nature, learning how to dispose of waste in nature, learn how to plan for a backpacking/open water trip, and more! Join our Adventure Camp to learn how to be a survivor in the wilderness. On Friday night, campers and staff will sleep on Jackson Island to make dinner, enjoy a campfire, and cook breakfast/clean up on the last day of camp. All staff are trained and are lifeguard certified. 

TEEN

Enjoy field trips to places such as Aquaboggen, Old Orchard Beach, mini-golf, disc golf, hikes, beaches, the Baldwin Center, and more! Join two staff for this camp to travel around and get out of town!

Camp Medical Staff

This position involves being on-site throughout the entire camp day and being responsible for medication distribution, aiding staff/campers in first aid situations, and heading up any medical emergency that may arise. Must be one of the following to qualify: WFR, RN, EMT
