SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

YMCA camp counselors serve the families of our community with programs and services tailored to fit the needs of those we reach. Three overarching goals drive our work: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Come join our team and make a difference! This summer, we are offering 3 types of Camp Counselor positions, with multiple people working in each category:

Traditional Day Camp

You would choose 1 of the following age groups:

Explorers: 

At Camp K, Explorers enjoy the traditional day camp setting. Each “pod” will consist of up to 10 campers and 2 staff members. Field trips will be taken each week to places like the Botanical Gardens, Clifford Park, Oak Point Farm, Barrett Park, and more! 

WE ARE ONLY LICENSED FOR 5+ YEARS OLD. Under 5 year olds will NOT be granted permission into Camp K. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.

Navigators: 

At Camp K, Navigators enjoy the traditional day camp setting. Each “pod” will consist of up to 12 campers and 2 staff members. Navigator campers will participate in archery, arts & crafts, boating, gardening, hiking & nature exploration, low ropes course, sports, and swimming. 

Wayfinders: 

At Camp K, Wayfinders enjoy the traditional day camp setting. Each “pod” will consist of up to 12 campers and 2 staff members. Wayfinder campers will be able to participate in archery, arts & crafts, boating, gardening, hiking & nature exploration, low ropes course, sports, and swimming. 

Specialty Camps

Must be able to lead all camps. A lifeguard certification is preferred, but not mandatory-- trainings can happen at Camp K upon your arrival. Staff working with specialty camps are scheduled based on need & interest in subject matter. Camps change weekly, as would staff schedules. 

NEW! WIZARDING WORLD CAMP (Full Day)

“Alohomora!” Visit Wizarding World has made its way to Camp K! Your child will leave their muggle lives behind them and enter the Wizarding World. They will learn spells, potions, the game of Quidditch while participating in STEAM based activities and engage with the community. Grab your wands, robes, and spell books and join us for some wizarding fun! This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! EMERGENCY RESPONDERS (Half Day)

Engage with local Emergency Responders and learn what it means to be a first responder. Learn what it takes to work in all different first responder fields, basic fire prevention skills, how to keep oneself safe in an emergency, how to help during an emergency in age-appropriate ways, use tools, and explore different equipment.

NEW! GARDENING (Full Day)

Hang out with our specialty camp staff to learn about all things gardening! With activities including but not limited to planting, harvesting, plant identification, ecosystems, color wheel theory with nature, natural plant buddies, and more, this camp will educate you on all things natural! This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! CREATE & BUILD CAMP (Full Day)

Build LEGO masterpieces, create sculptures, design, and draw a new board game, and find ways to protect your egg during the egg drop challenge. Use teamwork, imagination, and different techniques to test and retest their creations. This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

OUTDOOR COOKING CAMP (Full Day)

Join our specialty camp staff to learn how to build a fire, cook on an open fire, learn outdoor recipes, learn how to be environmentally friendly when cleaning up, and more in this full day camp. Our campers will learn how to construct a fire pit and cook a plethora of recipes to snack on throughout the day! Swim time will be scheduled daily to cool off.

NEW! CRAFTING CAMP (Full Day)

Express your creativity with different art forms such as clay work, themed crafts, friendship bracelets, jewelry, paper mâché, origami, and more! Your child will use a hands-on approach to bring their imaginative and unique designs to life. This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! ALL SPORTS (Full Day)

Play, learn, and meet new friends in the new All-Sports Camp. Throughout the week, your child will learn and play sports such as basketball, soccer, floor hockey, pickleball, volleyball, dodge ball, and various outdoor yard games! There will be a focus on teamwork, good sportsmanship, and the YMCA’s 4 core values: respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. A half day will be spent on the Baldwin Center Low Ropes Course. This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! DRAWING & PAINTING (Full Day)

Express your creativity with different drawing & painting forms ranging from watercolor to oil pastels, string painting to shading, learning about the color wheel, and using nature to create art! This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! ANIMATION CELEBRATION (Full Day)

It’s time for some innovative animation! Learn how to create a stop-motion mini-movie from screen test to post-production. Develop your own story, make a storyboard, and design scenery and colorful characters. Additionally, create your own Pokemon and its evolutions, and learn about comic books! This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! FORT BUILDING (Full Day)

Are you ready for a fun fort filled week? Put your building skills to the test with a variety of tools and materials! Once forts are constructed, games such as capture the flag, dodge ball and track down will be played! Strong, positive teamwork is what is needed to finish the week. This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day.

NEW! NINJA WARRIOR (Full Day)

Refine techniques, run courses, and condition campers for obstacle course racing. Take to the Low Ropes Course at the Baldwin Center, utilize equipment at the sports field, and more to stay active, work as a team, and have fun! This camp will have an opportunity to swim each day. 

NEW! LOW ROPES & TEAM BUILDING (Full Day)

Take to the low ropes course for this full day camp! Learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, the elements of the course, and more! Each day, campers will have the opportunity to swim or boat and play games that focus on the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Adventure Camps

Staff working with adventure camps are scheduled based on need & interest in subject matter. Camps change weekly, as would staff schedules. 

AQUA  ADVENTURE CAMP

Our campers will make a splash exploring some of Maine’s incredible wildlife, marine wonders, and water parks! Field trips include beaches, regional swimming holes, Aquaboggen, and more. For the fish in your family, this is the camp for them! A lifeguard will be provided so our campers can stay safe while exploring the water.  

BALDWIN CENTER ADVENTURE CAMP

Campers will enjoy a full day utilizing the YMCA’s Baldwin Center at our high ropes and low ropes course based facility. Activities will focus on team building, trust activities, learning to listen to yourself, confidence building, and fun. Once per day, swimming will be scheduled to cool off at the main campus. Each Friday, a trip to Monkey-See, Monkey-Do. 

NEW! HIKING ADVENTURE

Take to the local land trusts for the first two days of this camp, and then end the week going on a day hike to a Mid-Coast Maine Mountain. Hiking experience and endurance is required, as one of the hikes we take will be just about 9 miles in total. Two staff members certified in WAFA will go on trips with this group to ensure maximum safety. 

JUNIOR NATURALIST CAMP (Half Day)

Campers will travel by bus from BRYMCA Camp Knickerbocker to local BRLT preserves where we will discover the wonders of nature through play and exploration. BRLT Environmental Educator Tracey Hall will offer a variety of activities: dip nets in a pond to see what critters call it home, adopt a tree, build a survival shelter, investigate a rotting log, create nature art, and many more adventures that will connect campers to the outdoors.  

CODE BREAKERS CAMP

Campers will enjoy a week of learning about ciphers, riddles, creating their own escape rooms, and taking a field trip to the Escape Room in Portland. Two trips will be taken to Portland so campers can enjoy working together to solve clues in two different types of rooms with different themes. An additional waiver will need to be signed to participate in the Escape Rooms. Each day, swimming will be scheduled to cool off in the lake!

NEW! TEEN ADVENTURE 

Enjoy field trips to places such as Aquaboggen, Old Orchard Beach, mini-golf, disc golf, hikes, beaches, the Baldwin Center, and more! Join two staff for this camp to travel around and get out of town!

NEW! SURVIVOR CAMP (TWO WEEK PROGRAM)

This camp is designed to challenge campers to learn new skills in the outdoors such as building fires, cooking on an open flame, building shelters to sleep in, learning about nature, learning how to dispose of waste in nature, learn how to plan for a backpacking/open water trip, and more! Join our Adventure Camp staff for this NEW 2-week session (both weeks require attendance) to learn how to be a survivor in the wilderness. On the second Thursday, campers and staff will spend the night on the island that separates Big Knickerbocker Lake and Little Knickerbocker Lake and make dinner, enjoy a campfire, and cook breakfast/clean up on the last day of camp. All staff are trained and are lifeguard certified. 

NEW! TEEN SURVIVOR CAMP (TWO WEEK PROGRAM)

Camp Nurse

This position involves being on-site throughout the entire camp day and being responsible for medication distribution, aiding staff/campers in first aid situations, and heading up any medical emergency that may arise. Must be one of the following to qualify: WFR, RN, EMT
